Overview
The Steersperson in Training (SIT) is steering the canoe without a Supervising Accredited Steersperson (SAS). The SAS is in a separate canoe with their own crew. In this situation, the SIT assumes responsibility for the safety of the crew and equipment.
When you, your ASM and SAS agree you are ready to steer a canoe under indirect supervision notify the Steering Coordinator (SC) prior to proceeding.
Before each session under indirect supervision, the SIT, SAS, crew, and program leader must jointly assess and consider:
- Ocean and weather conditions
- Crew strength and experience
- Planned route and float plan
- Boat traffic
- Any other relevant safety factors
